Why Friendly Kite Is One of the Best Kitesurfing Schools in the Dominican Republic

If you're searching for the best kitesurfing school in the Dominican Republic, choosing the right school is about much more than finding wind and renting a kite.

Certification, instructor experience, safety, equipment, water conditions, local knowledge and how a school treats its students all matter.

At Friendly Kite School in Playa Buen Hombre, we've built our school around one simple principle:

The student comes first.

Friendly Kite Buen Hombre is an IKO PRO Center, with a team of certified kiteboarding professionals capable of teaching someone from their very first kite lesson through independent riding—and even helping advanced riders progress toward becoming professional kiteboarding instructors.

But Friendly Kite is about more than lessons.

We're part of Buen Hombre, and our mission has always been to create a place where students, local riders, independent kiters, families and even riders visiting with other schools are welcomed and respected.

The beach is for everyone.

Friendly Kite Buen Hombre — IKO PRO Center

Friendly Kite Buen Hombre is:

IKO PRO Center No. 292583

The International Kiteboarding Organization (IKO) currently lists Friendly Kite Buen Hombre as a PRO Center on its official website.

Our professional qualifications are important because kitesurfing is an extreme sport. Students deserve to know that the people teaching them have received proper training.

We don't expect you to simply believe our advertising.

Verify us.

Our school and professional team can be checked through IKO.

From Your First Kite Lesson to Becoming an Instructor

One of the things that makes Friendly Kite different is the level of progression available.

A student can arrive in Buen Hombre having never touched a kite before.

Our instructors can teach that person the fundamentals of kite control and safety and continue through body dragging, water starts, riding, transitions and independent kiteboarding.

But Friendly Kite's training doesn't have to stop there.

As an IKO professional center, we can also host professional instructor training courses, which we generally organize approximately twice per year.

That creates an incredible progression:

Beginner → Independent Rider → Advanced Rider → Professional Instructor

Some people come to Friendly to discover kitesurfing.

Others eventually make it their profession.

Why Learn Kitesurfing in Buen Hombre?

We believe Playa Buen Hombre is one of the best places in the Caribbean to learn kitesurfing.

The reason is the combination of conditions.

Shallow water

Students can stand in large portions of the teaching area, making learning and communication with an instructor considerably easier.

Flat water

The protected conditions provide an excellent environment for beginners while also creating an incredible playground for advanced riders.

Side-onshore wind

The predominant wind direction provides favorable conditions for teaching and riding.

Warm Caribbean water

Forget heavy wetsuits. Buen Hombre offers the experience people imagine when they think about learning to kite in the Caribbean.

Space

Buen Hombre remains a relatively undiscovered kite destination compared with some of the Caribbean's more crowded locations.

You have room to learn.

Local Kitesurfing Experts Who Are Here to Help

Friendly Kite isn't simply located in Buen Hombre.

We live, work, teach and kite here.

We know the local wind, water, tides, kite sizes, riding areas, surrounding beaches, accommodations, restaurants and community.

So if you're planning a trip, ask us questions—even before you book anything.

What month should you come?

What kite sizes should you bring?

Are you ready to rent independently?

Should you bring your own equipment?

Where should you stay?

Where should you eat?

Which downwinder should you try?

Is Buen Hombre appropriate for your level?

We'll give you an honest answer.

Sometimes the honest answer may mean we don't sell you anything.

That's okay.

We're here to help.

Hundreds of Students and 5-Star Feedback

Friendly Kite has taught hundreds of students from around the world.

But we're especially proud that much of our business comes from repeat customers and recommendations.

Students return.

Then they bring friends.

Partners.

Children.

And families.

At the time of writing, Friendly Kite has 263 Google reviews with a 5-star rating.

For us, that's much more meaningful than simply telling people we're the best.

See what the people who actually visited us have to say.

Private Lessons — US$70 Per Hour

Our current private kitesurfing lesson rate is:

US$70/hour

We also have a different philosophy about payment.

We normally don't require students to pay for their entire lesson package upfront.

Meet your instructor.

Take your lessons.

Experience Friendly Kite.

Then settle your account at the end.

We trust our students, and we want them to judge us by the service they actually receive.

Lessons in Four Languages

Our international team can provide instruction in:

English • Spanish • Portuguese • French

Clear communication becomes particularly important when teaching kite control and safety procedures.

Professional Equipment and Safety

Friendly Kite teaches with Vantage Kites, a Dutch kiteboarding brand focused on performance and durability.

Our kite range runs from approximately 2.5 m² to 14 m², allowing instructors to select equipment according to the student's size, ability and wind conditions.

Students use appropriate safety equipment, and lessons follow IKO teaching and safety standards.

We also maintain a rescue boat for emergency situations when necessary.

Our objective isn't simply to get someone onto a board quickly.

We want to create safe, confident and independent kiteboarders.

How to Verify an IKO School in Buen Hombre

We believe students should independently verify the professional credentials of any kiteboarding school they're considering.

At the time this article was published, the International Kiteboarding Organization's official Dominican Republic directory lists Friendly Kite Buen Hombre among the country's current IKO Centers, and Friendly Kite has an active IKO profile identifying the school as PRO.

Friendly Kite Buen Hombre's center number is:

IKO PRO Center No. 292583

If another school or instructor advertises IKO credentials, don't simply rely on what appears on their own website or social media.

Check IKO's current directory or contact IKO directly and ask about their status.

We encourage you to do exactly the same with Friendly Kite.

Transparency helps make kiteboarding safer.

Stay, Eat and Experience Buen Hombre

Friendly Kite is much more than a place to take a two-hour lesson.

We have our own accommodations and also work with Friendly-approved local accommodations around Buen Hombre.

Our beachfront restaurant serves American-style favorites, steaks, burgers, seafood and local dishes.

But we also encourage our guests to eat around town.

We recommend local restaurants because we want visitors to experience Buen Hombre—not just Friendly Kite.

Our covered boat also allows us to organize experiences such as:

Cayo Arena • Seven Islands • Playa Popa • Downwinders • Fishing • Wakeboarding • Boat Excursions

That means non-kiting partners, friends and family can enjoy Buen Hombre too.

Friendly Kite Youth Program

Friendly Kite was created with the local community in mind.

Through the Friendly Kite Youth Program, we help give local children access to kiteboarding instruction, safety education, equipment and opportunities to progress toward professional certification.

We want children growing up beside an incredible kiteboarding destination to have the opportunity to participate in—and eventually professionally benefit from—the sport developing around their community.

For some, kitesurfing can become more than recreation.

It can become a profession.

Built With Buen Hombre, Not Around It

Friendly Kite began partly because we wanted to create better opportunities, better pay and better treatment for local people working around kitesurfing.

As Friendly grows, we want Buen Hombre to benefit too.

We employ and train local people.

We partner with local accommodations.

We recommend local restaurants.

We support local youth.

And we're proud to have the support of the community around us.

Buen Hombre isn't simply where our business happens.

It's our home.

The Beach Is for Everyone

This may be the most important thing to understand about Friendly Kite.

You don't have to be our customer to be welcome.

Independent rider? Welcome.

Learning with another school? Welcome.

Professional rider? Welcome.

Complete beginner? Welcome.

Local resident? Welcome.

Family visiting the beach? Welcome.

Friendly Kite believes that the beach should be enjoyed respectfully by everyone.

That's what Friendly means to us.

When Is the Best Time to Kitesurf in Buen Hombre?

Friendly Kite Buen Hombre is open year-round.

For travelers planning specifically around wind, we generally recommend approximately:

December 15 through the first week of September.

During the Dominican Republic's less reliable autumn wind period, our second location—Friendly Kite Brazil in Praia de Macapá—operates approximately from September through the first week of December.

That allows the Friendly community to continue following great kiteboarding conditions between two destinations.

A Kitesurfing Community Reaching Millions

Friendly Kite has grown far beyond Buen Hombre through social media.

Across our social platforms, Friendly Kite content currently generates approximately 50 million views per month.

Those videos show what actually happens here:

Lessons.

Falls.

First rides.

Big jumps.

Safety training.

Local riders.

Kids progressing.

Advanced coaching.

Downwinders.

And everyday life in Buen Hombre.

For many visitors, their first experience with Buen Hombre happens through a Friendly Kite video.

Then one day, they arrive here themselves.
